Common questions
Is the VIN report really free?
Yes. The report is built from public data published by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. EPA, and there is no sign-up or payment.
Does the report show accident or title history?
No. Accident, damage, title and odometer records aren't public data. For those, buy a vehicle history report from a provider such as CARFAX Canada or AutoCheck before you pay for a used car.
Does it show whether this car's recalls were fixed?
It lists every recall issued for the model year. Whether a recall was repaired on a specific car is only in the manufacturer's records: check the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup, ask any franchised dealer, or ask the seller for the work order.
Does it work for cars in Canada?
Yes, for any vehicle with a 17-character VIN sold in Canada or the USA. Recalls come from NHTSA; Transport Canada also publishes Canadian recalls, which are linked from every report.
